PhD position in High energy physics group

Department of Theoretical Physics at the Jozef Stefan Institute is announcing a PhD student position in theoretical particle physics.

The recipient will be hosted by the particle physics group in a dynamic environment with regular events: international workshops, group retreats, seminars and summer schools. The vibrant community of faculty members, postdocs, students and visitors offers opportunities for work and collaborations. The group’s research activities cover flavour physics, collider physics, physics of neutrinos, dark matter phenomenology, phase transitions in the early universe, model building, machine learning approaches in high energy physics, lattice QCD. The PhD thesis research topic is oriented towards the role of quark and lepton flavor in BSM and SMEFT, flavor symmetries, connections to lepton and baryon number violation and related phenomenology of such models in current and future experiments.  See recent papers co-authored by the permanent group members.

The recipient is to complete the PhD programme and obtain a PhD title at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Ljubljana.

The PhD scholarship is funded by the Slovenian research agency and consists of a monthly salary and a generous travel fund for summer schools, conferences and visits. The four-year contract starts beginning of October 2026.

The applicant should obtain a masters degree or equivalent by the date of appointment. Candidates with a strong record in quantum field theory, particle physics and cosmology, will be given preference. The application should consist of a motivation letter, concise CV with degree certificates, descriptions of grading and scientific awards/achievements. Explain the reasons why you should be considered for the PhD position, specify your preferred topics of interest and highlight your prior engagements in physics. Arrange for one letter of recommendation.
Shortlisted candidates will be contacted and interviewed.
The application should be sent to the email nejc.kosnik@ijs.si by April 20th 2026.
The reference letters should be sent to hep-th@ijs.si, also by April 20th.
