Urban Čoko, “Particle-based simulations of ultrasound in a GHz to MHz frequency range”

October 22 at 14:15 - 15:15

Ultrasound is increasingly used in biomedical applications such as drug and gene delivery, where acoustic waves interact with microbubbles, cells, and tissues. While particle-based simulations are widely used in biophysics to model such structures, their use for ultrasound propagation remains largely restricted to nanoscopic scales. In this talk, I will present a novel particle-based method for simulating ultrasound propagation in weakly compressible fluids on micrometer scales, spanning frequencies from GHz to medically relevant MHz. The method is fully compatible with existing particle-based models of biological structures. Building on this method, I will present a virtual ultrasound machine that models arbitrary particle-based structures immersed in a fluid between two ultrasound transducers. As a demonstration, the machine is used to simulate microbubble motion driven by acoustic radiation forces, a phenomenon known as “acoustophoresis”.
